Recipe instructions

Step 1

Step 1
How to stew buckwheat with cabbage in a frying pan? Very simple. To begin, prepare the necessary ingredients according to the list. This buckwheat tastes best with young, juicy cabbage. You can replace tomato paste with ketchup or fresh, finely chopped peeled tomatoes.

Step 2

Step 2
Sort the buckwheat and rinse thoroughly until the water runs clear. Then drain the cereal in a colander and let the water drain.

Step 3

Step 3
Peel the cabbage from the top leaves and chop it. You can cut it very finely or a little larger — as you like.

Step 4

Step 4
Peel the carrots and grate on a coarse grater.

Step 5

Step 5
Cut the onion into small cubes. If you or your household do not like onion pieces in the finished dish, you can add a whole onion along with buckwheat (step 9). It will boil down during stewing, give up all its juices, and then you can throw it away.

Step 6

Step 6
Heat vegetable oil in a frying pan. Add the onion and sauté over medium heat until translucent.

Step 7

Step 7
Add carrots to the pan and simmer until soft.

Step 8

Step 8
Add cabbage, salt and pepper to taste. Mix everything and simmer over low heat for 10 minutes, stirring occasionally. The cabbage should be almost soft. Depending on the juiciness and freshness of the cabbage, more or less time may be needed for stewing.

Step 9

Step 9
When the cabbage is almost ready, add the washed buckwheat.

Step 10

Step 10
Fill everything with water so that the water completely covers the contents of the pan.

Step 11

Step 11
Bring to a boil over medium heat and simmer covered over low heat for 10-12 minutes.

Step 12

Step 12
Add tomato paste. By this time, the buckwheat will swell slightly and absorb some of the moisture, but not all. If there is no liquid left in the pan from the stew, add about 50 ml more water.

Step 13

Step 13
Mix everything well and simmer the buckwheat and cabbage for another 5-7 minutes or a little longer under the lid until cooked. All excess moisture should completely boil away or be absorbed into vegetables and cereals. Bon appetit!
