Recipe instructions

Step 1

Step 1
How to cook lentil porridge? Prepare your food. This recipe is designed for red lentils — they cook faster and better, unlike other varieties (green or yellow). Use filtered or bottled water — tap water can give the dish an unpleasant aftertaste. How to choose a pan for cooking porridge, read the article at the end of this recipe.

Step 2

Step 2
Sort the lentils as needed, removing foreign grains and debris. Pour the lentils into a saucepan with a thick bottom — in such a container the porridge will not burn and will cook evenly. Rinse the grains thoroughly in cool water, changing the water several times, until transparent.

Step 3

Step 3
Pour clean cold water over the lentils in a ratio of one to two — one part legumes to two parts liquid.

Step 4

Step 4
Place the saucepan over medium heat. Wait until the water boils and white foam appears on the surface. Remove it with a spoon or slotted spoon. Add salt and stir.

Step 5

Step 5
Turn the heat to low, cover the saucepan with a lid and leave the porridge to cook for 10-15 minutes. Do not cover the lid completely — the lentils may escape during cooking and stain your stove. Stir the porridge from time to time. If the water boils away and the grains are not ready yet, add a little more hot water. Precisely hot, so that time is not wasted heating it in a saucepan.

Step 6

Step 6
Try the porridge — if the lentils are soft, then they are ready. Turn off the heat, cover the saucepan with a lid and leave to stand for another 10 minutes. During this time, the grains will finally reach readiness. My red lentil porridge became almost puree during this time.

Step 7

Step 7
Serve simple lentil porridge in water with butter, butter or vegetable oil. Bon appetit!
