Onion Yeast Roll for Fasting Days

Onion roll is very tasty and simple! Onion roll is an excellent pastry that can be successfully served during fasting days. If you are preparing a non-lenten version, you can add an egg and milk to the dough instead of water, the dough will turn out more rich. The roll has an original filling of fried onions. The pastries are very interesting, original, please your family! This roll can be served with tea, coffee, or milk. It would be appropriate to serve it with soups and borscht. Believe me — itʼs very tasty! Try it, experiment!!

Sugar 1 tbsp
Wheat flour 4 cup
Water 300 ml
Bulb onions 3 pc
Sunflower oil 4 tbsp
Dry yeast 1 tsp

Recipe instructions

Step 1

Step 1
To prepare an onion roll, take the ingredients according to the list: wheat flour, yeast, water, sugar and salt for the dough, butter, onions and ground black pepper for the filling.

Step 2

Step 2
First, prepare the dough: add sugar, salt and yeast to warm water, add a couple of tablespoons of flour and make a dough. Let it bubble, add a little oil. Then gradually add the sifted flour until you get a dough that sticks to your hands.

Step 3

Step 3
Place the dough in a larger bowl, cover with film and a towel, place in a warm place for 2 hours. After an hour, beat down and let rise again.

Step 4

Step 4
While the dough is rising, prepare the onion filling. Peel several onions — 2-3 large ones, cut into large pieces.

Step 5

Step 5
Heat the oil and add the onion, simmer until tender, lightly salt and pepper. Do not boil the onion, it is better when it retains its integrity — after all, it is still baking; let the filling cool.

Step 6

Step 6
After 2 hours the dough has risen — see how fluffy it is? Wonderful light, airy dough.

Step 7

Step 7
Roll out half the dough into a layer, place the onion filling in the middle.

Step 8

Step 8
Roll the dough into a roll, pinch the edge tightly, you can cut off the excess.

Step 9

Step 9
Grease with sunflower oil (lenten version) or egg and sprinkle with herbs or seeds — I took cumin, I really like its aroma and taste.

Step 10

Step 10
Bake the roll by placing it in a cold oven and turning it on at 170 degrees. When it is well browned — after 30-35 minutes — the roll is ready.

Step 11

Step 11
Remove the onion roll from the oven, cover it with a towel, and let it rest. Thatʼs all! A fluffy, aromatic onion roll at home is ready! Bon appetit!
