Recipe instructions

Step 1

Step 1
How to make coconut milk from a whole coconut? You just need to buy a coconut. How to choose the right coconut? The shell should be free of cracks, chips, stains and soft areas. When you shake the coconut, you should hear a loud splash of liquid inside. Read more about the signs of a spoiled nut at the end of the recipe under the steps.

Step 2

Step 2
Rinse the coconut thoroughly. Use a knife to make a hole in the softest of the three depressions and drain the liquid. It can also be drunk through a straw. Some people confuse this liquid with coconut milk. The liquid inside the nut is called coconut water and consists of almost 95% water itself and contains virtually no fat or other nutrients. Milk is a mixture of coconut pulp and water carefully processed to a homogeneous mass.

Step 3

Step 3
Holding the coconut in one hand, use the pointed end of the hammer to tap the coconut firmly around the circumference, two-thirds of the way into the indentations. As you tap, a crack will appear on the shell.

Step 4

Step 4
After this, divide the coconut into two halves. Using a knife, pry the flesh from the coconut halves and separate it from the shell.

Step 5

Step 5
Also remove the thin brown skin from the pulp. Cut the pulp into pieces.

Step 6

Step 6
Place the coconut in a blender and grind until finely shredded. You can also grate the pulp or mince it through a meat grinder.

Step 7

Step 7
Place the coconut shavings in a saucepan and pour in boiling water. Stir. Cover the pan with a lid and leave for 2-3 hours.

Step 8

Step 8
Strain the coconut milk through a double layer of cheesecloth and squeeze out the shavings thoroughly.

Step 9

Step 9
Coconut milk can be drunk or used in a variety of dishes. You can dry the shavings and also use them in baking and desserts. Store coconut milk in the refrigerator for no longer than 3 days. Bon appetit!
