Making and Using Fresh Orange Zest

You can make your own orange zest for baking and desserts. Many dishes use lemon or orange zest. Of course, nothing beats fresh citrus zest, but there are times when you donʼt have any on hand. I usually carefully grate the lemon zest, dry it and store it in a hermetically sealed jar. But orange zest can be used not only as a flavoring agent, but also as a dye. In this case, it will be better if you grind it into powder.

Recipe instructions

Step 1

Step 1
First of all, wash the oranges and dry them.

Step 2

Step 2
Next, take a sharp knife and remove the zest so as not to capture the white layer of skin. Ideally, the zest on both sides will be the same orange color. Remove the zest slowly, and be sure to use a sharp knife, then everything will work out

Step 3

Step 3
Let the zest dry for 2-3 days.

Step 4

Step 4
When the zest has become dry and brittle, you need to grind it. A coffee grinder works well for this; in the absence of one, I use a food processor or blender.

Step 5

Step 5
The finer we chop the zest, the better, especially if you plan to use it as a powder dye. Thatʼs all, the zest is ready.
