Hawaiian Malasadas: Yeast Donut Delight

Delicious donuts with a delicate, pleasant taste! You can be an excellent cook, you can cook food from all countries, peoples and times, but if you don’t know how to make punahou, then you will never gain popularity among your friends. Punahous are yeasted sour dough donuts brought to your home by the "red riding hoods" on a tough mission to raise public funds. However, "punahou" is the local name for the delicacy. All over the world it is called "malasadas". Naturally, the culinary recipe for punahou differs from the recipe for malasadas, at least in that they are baked in Hawaii.

Recipe instructions

Step 1

Step 1
For the recipe you will need: flour, milk, eggs, yeast, butter, vegetable oil for frying, salt, sugar.

Step 2

Step 2
Dissolve sugar and yeast in 100 ml of warm milk, cover with a saucer and let stand for 10 minutes to activate the yeast. As soon as foam appears on the surface, the yeast has started working.

Step 3

Step 3
While the yeast is activating, separate the yolks from the whites.

Step 4

Step 4
Heat the remaining milk until warm, add the yolks, salt, and melted butter. Lastly, add activated yeast. Mix with a whisk.

Step 5

Step 5
Sift the flour. If you don’t have a sieve, you can use a whisk to beat the flour.

Step 6

Step 6
Add the sifted flour in small portions into the warm milk (mixture) and at the same time stir with a whisk. The result will be a dough thicker than for pancakes.

Step 7

Step 7
Now set the bowl with the dough aside, cover it with a towel — let it sit warm for half an hour. Then process the dough with your hands and leave it warm for an hour and a half.

Step 8

Step 8
Heat oil in a deep frying pan. The oil level should be such that it covers half of the donut at once. You can heat the oil over high heat, and then reduce it a little.

Step 9

Step 9
While the oil is heating up, take the dough in small portions, roll it out to about 0.5 cm thick and cut out future donuts.

Step 10

Step 10
Place donuts in very hot oil and fry on both sides until browned. Donuts expand quickly when fried.

Step 11

Step 11
Donuts are ready! Ready-made donuts can be sprinkled with powdered sugar (easily made from sugar in a coffee grinder), poured with chocolate sauce, etc.
